Dates: Thu, 18 May 2023 – Sun, 21 May 2023
Players will gather in Pittsford, NY, to tackle the formidable Oak Hill Golf Course, stretching over 7,394 yards. Since we lack the usual historical data for an in-depth analysis, we’ll provide a brief overview of the key factors to consider and our targeted players.
Oak Hill is a Donald Ross design that recently underwent renovations to restore its original style. The changes include adding approximately 250 yards to the course, converting the greens to pure bentgrass, removing trees, and relocating and eliminating bunkers. The tree removal suggests that missing fairways may not be as penalizing as before. However, we still anticipate a challenging course, with a winning score expected to be around 12-under par.
Our main focus will be on Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, Greens in Regulation (GIR), Strokes Gained: Approach, and short game performance. With small greens, we seek players who can hit as many as possible and possess a solid short game for when they miss the green. We may avoid golfers with weak short games altogether. Despite the tree removal, there remains an advantage for long and accurate hitters, especially considering the small greens. Additionally, we believe it’s worth examining scoring performance on par 4s ranging from 450 to 500 yards since many challenging holes fall within this distance range.
In summary, we will target players who excel in tee-to-green performance, emphasizing GIR% and short game abilities, which are crucial for this event.
