The Future Of British Boxing

We here at DGNsports had the opportunity to catch up with the super lightweight and Birmingham’s own Tommy ‘Gun’ Collins recently and our discussions followed Tommy’s future endeavours in his prospering boxing Career. Since his debut back in 2020 Collins has been boxing professionally when making the switch from amateur and currently holds an impressive 8-0 W/L ratio (with 1 KO under his belt). The Bluenose has such determination that we don’t see him getting beat anytime soon.

We began the interview with some simple questions about his day to day life surrounding the efforts that go into forming and maintaining the physical and mental aspects of his training, which is where we learnt how serious he takes his career due to his complete dedication based on his own life outside the ring and how he handles both a social and professional balance. Collins, while still the life of the party, doesn’t drink alcohol (which will be a surprise to most) and even when away for a well deserved break he still maintains the professional mindset and tends not to break camp.

In his own words Collins explained, “I’ve got a holiday to Thailand coming up but it’s going to be more like an international training camp than a holiday to be honest.” which just emphasises how important his career is to him.

We then moved onto his training, which is mostly at Fitness Factory Birmingham, he’s supported by gym owner Simon Haycock and stated, “I am usually there all year round” and that he also spars at other gyms. Following his statement he then went onto say, “I’d follow my dad where he wants me to go” as his dad, Dean Collins, is his main trainer. We could see when talking about his dad how much respect he had for him and how close they are along with brother Joey ‘The Bull’ Collins who is also trained by father Dean.

On a side note, we moved onto taking about the current professional boxing scene, more specifically the heavyweight division. When asked about the Anthony Joshua fight last weekend we both agreed that it wasn’t at a level of performance that gave him any right to call out someone on the level of Tyson Fury. And, if Joshua was in there with a more well known on the level of someone like Deontay Wilder or Dillian Whyte he wouldn’t of walked away with the victory. We also agreed on how the heavyweight division isn’t as good as it was maybe 10+ years ago.

We’d like to finish off by saying what an absolute top guy Tommy is and genuinely one of the most dedicated boxers we’ve had the pleasure of meeting, also we here at DGNsports, believe that there is a massive future ahead for Collins and we’re all looking forward to seeing where he goes next in his professional career. #TEAMCOLLINS #KRO
