Final
Daniil Medvedev vs Denis Shapovalov, 1pm GMT
Our Picks:
Medvedev ML @2/9
Score @2-0 Medvedev @8/11
Is Medvedev back to his devastating best?
Daniil Medvedev is in the ATP Vienna against Denis Shapovalov and were backing him to win in straight sets. Medvedev was very solid in his match up against Dimitrov, dominating in all facets. After a few weeks off between tournaments he looks fresh and primed for a few big end-of-year tournaments, and should have plenty left in the tank to finish off Shapovalov.
Shapovalov also had a straight sets win against Coric in his semi final, but Coric appeared to be hampered by a shoulder injury and allowed Shapovalov to run over the top of him. But in my view Shapovalov struggles against players who can extend rallies, he got belted by De Minaur who plays that way, and Medvedev’s consistency and defensive abilities are far greater than De Minaur’s, which will lead to errors and frustration.
Head to head is 3-2 in Medvedev’s favour – 3 of those match-ups were in 2017/2018, but the last two (2021/2022) were straight sets to Medvedev. He is also 2-0 on indoor hardcourt against Shapovalov.
Shapovalov is capable of extending either set so we are wary of taking the under, we do see straight sets is the safer play even though the odds are a little lower.
