Succession to win Best Drama Series at the Emmy Awards
Best Comedy, Abbott Elementary – Ted Lasso is the favourite here and mostly likely to win but Abbott Elementary, a new show, has a real chance of pulling off the upset. There is energy behind it as it would be the first network show to win this award since Modern Family did in 2014. Also it won the best casting for a comedy Emmy last week, the last time a show won for best casting in a comedy but didn’t win for best comedy was in 2014. Recently you could have got it at 5.00 odds, I got it at 11.00 weeks ago. Lasso is a juggernaut but this season wasn’t as loved as the first one so there is a chance here.
Best Limited Series, The White Lotus – Our 2nd most confident pick, we got it at 1.90 odds in July but now the highest we are seeing is 1.60 at Safe Bet. This is a 2 horse race between The White Lotus and Dopesick and they were basically even in betting odds when this started. Most predictors think Lotus takes it, Dopesick is a straightforward and heavy retelling of a true story but The White Lotus was a phenomenon last summer and to me, the more artful and entertaining. If you can find decent odds, take it.
Best Actor Drama – Could be the most wide open category so a lot of uncertainty but very playable odds all around. We would bet either Jung-Jae Lee of Squid Game who has won some of the prior acting awards or Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul who seems to have gained a lot of momentum (We have him at 11.00 odds where he was about 2 weeks ago, he is at 1.91 on Bovada but 3.75 at some other books). We think the two Succession actors will vote split this time around.
Best Actress Drama – Zendaya is the favourite, best odds I’ve seen is high 1.50’s, Melanie Lynskey of Yellowjackets has a shot at it (6.00 at Betway recently, that is tasty) and if we were going the underdog route, we would back her. Laura Linney of Ozark has an outside shot in the show’s final season but more than likely 1 of the first 2.
Best Supporting Actor Drama – It will likely be one of the Succession actors, Culkin or Macfadyen. Culkin is the favourite in the high 1.50’s. MacFayden we got in the mid 3’s. The way we played it is we put one unit on Culkin and a half unit on MacFayden. If Culkin wins we profit very slightly but don’t lose, if MacFayden wins, we make some profit. Update – Honestly, I think I might have played it wrong here and my math was off when I made it, if I could go back I would just put the half unit on MacFayden.
Best Supporting Actress Drama – This one seems wide open and we could see 1 of 3 actresses winning, either Ozark’s Julia Garner who is the odds on favourite and has won it for the past 2 years, Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn who was a longshot but has gained a lot momentum with the timing of the airing of the last half of the season and Squid Game’s HoYung Jung. We don’t know who is winning this but we put a unit on Seehorn at 4.00 odds.
Best Actor Comedy – It is between 2 former winners, Bill Hader who has won it twice and Jason Sudeikis who won it last year. We think it will be a close call but we am leaning on Hader and put a unit on him at 1.85 odds. We just found his performance this season to be a huge step up from what was already a tremendous and complex character.
Best Actress Comedy – Jean Smart of Hacks who won last year is a big favourite, Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary is the only other person with a shot at winning it. The odds for Smart are dog shit, my play was to put a half unit on Brunson when it was at 4.50 odds and hope for the upset.
Best Supporting Actor Comedy – Two former winners in this category with Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso (won last year) vs Henry Winkler of Barry. Goldstein is a big favourite and the character is beloved and we think he will win but his odds are also dogshit. So my play was to throw a half unit on Winkler at 5.50 and hope for the upset.
Best Supporting Actress Comedy – Another race between actors from Lasso & Barry. Hannah Waddingham of Lasso is a big odds on favourite but Janelle James of Abbott Elementary is a breakout star with a lot of momentum and high ass odds (got her for 1 unit at 5.50 odds the other day) and has a chance at the upset.
