Grand Slam #1

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

We will post daily picks through out the tournament, so be sure to check back daily.

Our Picks:

Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Maria Timofeeva

Our Pick: Maia -4.5 @4/5

Despite the fact Haddad Maia hasn’t progressed passed the second round often at the Slams, her results have been phenomenal outside of them and she’ll fight every single time she takes to the court, regardless of what’s come before. Timofeeva may be given chances to take control of the match but the physicality the Brazilian brings to the court will be tough to live with.

Coco Gauff vs Alycia Parks

Pick: Gauff 2-0 @1/4

This is potentially the most dangerous match Gauff will face up until the semifinals. Alycia Parks could be untouchable on serve for the duration of the match or she could turn up without landing many first serves. It’s probably safest to assume the latter given Gauff hasn’t sustained a loss to a player ranked outside the top 10 since last July.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Luca Van Assche

Pick: Tsitsipas to win and over 35.5 games @5/4

Stefanos Tsitsipas may not be in the greatest form but, for all his high profile losses last year, he generally took care of business against lower ranked players and his level in Australia is always worthy of the top 10. Van Assche’s inexperience at the ATP level didn’t hold him back in his first two five-set wins but it’ll certainly be an issue here.

Ben Shelton vs Adrian Mannarino

Pick: Shelton to win @4/11

Shelton has shown plenty of signs of vulnerability in his first two matches but it hasn’t mattered his serve has kept him ticking along steadily. There are a few traits of Mannarino’s that will be neutralised by Shelton’s being a lefty but, if they do start trading from the back of the court, the Frenchman will still have ways of rattling Shelton. The base level brought by Shelton’s serve will probably still be too high for the upset, however.

Karen Khachanov vs Tomas Machac

Pick: Khachanov to win @8/13

Machac played the match of his life to defeat Tiafoe in the second round but it’s hard to say whether the unpredictable Czech can duplicate that performance. Khachanov is a different kettle of fish from Tiafoe a fairly high base level is pretty much guaranteed and he’ll likely make the match a slog.

Novak Djokovic vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry

Pick: Djokovic 3-0 @4/6

Djokovic has shown signs of frailty in his first two matches but, regardless of his level of play, he’s been able to dig deep when it matters most. Expect a similar pattern against Etcheverry. The 30th seed will be more than willing to make things gruelling and physical. Djokovic will find a way but it could be ugly.
