Grand Slam #1

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

We will post daily picks through out the tournament, so be sure to check back daily.

Our Picks:

Hubert Hurkacz vs Jakub Mensik

Pick: Hurkacz -4.5 @10/11

Mensik played well against Denis Shapovalov, although the Canadian was far below his best so soon into his comeback from injury. The fast conditions in Melbourne suit Hurkacz well. Expect him to hold his serve consistently and capitalize enough times on return to win.

Cameron Norrie vs Giulio Zeppieri

Pick: Norrie 3-0 @7/4

This a tougher round than it appears for Norrie against the huge hitting qualifier, Guilio Zeppieri. The depth of experience and trust in his game on this surface will serve the Brit well here, however. He should know how to withstand everything Zeppieri throws at him.

Holger Rune vs Arthur Cazaux

Pick: Both Players to win a set and Rune to win the Match @6/5

Rune’s tendency to be indecisive between playing aggressive or passive will probably see him in another complicated situation against Arthur Cazaux. So long as he’s physically fine, the young gun seems to play his best tennis when his back’s against the wall. No matter the shifts in momentum, he should come through.

Daniil Medvedev vs Emil Ruusuvuori

Pick: Medvedev 3-0 @4/5

It looks like a difficult second round for Medvedev but Ruusuvuori isn’t the kind of player that causes him grief. The Finn’s serve isn’t quite good enough to do consistent damage and his massive forehand will be absorbed by the defensive powers of the world #3.

Tommy Paul vs Jack Draper

Pick: Paul ML @8/11

Draper’s biggest weakness has been his vulnerability to injury. It’s boiling hot in Australia and Giron took the Brit passed the three-hour mark on Monday, where Draper vomited at the end of the match due to an anxiety attack. Tommy Paul came through far more comfortably against Barrere and will be looking to match his semifinal appearance from last year. Though Draper beat Paul in Adelaide, we think the conditions and fitness favour the American.

Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins

Pick: Over 17.5 Games @4/5

In a rematch of their one-sided semifinal two years ago, Swiatek is looking for revenge against Collins. They are at different stages of their careers, however—the Pole is amidst a 17-match winning streak on hard and Collins is still finding her form after a minor injury. The American won’t be afraid to bully the world #1’s serve again though so it’ll be an exciting encounter.

Jasmine Paolini vs Tatjana Maria

Pick: Paolini ML @4/11

Paolini was not at her absolute best against Diane Shnaider, but still won in straight sets. This is a good matchup for the Italian. Jasmine Paolini can be aggressive, but she is also adept at making her opponent move round the court with her consistency. We think that will overwhelm the German veteran Tatjana Maria.
