Today, the World Tour Finals are starting in Turin and they open with the home nation player, Jannik Sinner playing Stefanos Tsitsipas. This will be Sinner’s first appearance at the ATP Finals, but in 2019, he won the Next Gen ATP Finals playing for his home crowd in Milan.
Sinner is coming into this tournament playing the best tennis of his life, winning the titles in Shanghai and Vienna, beating players like Alcaraz, Medvedev, Rublev, and Dimitrov along the way. Sinner is 8-5 this year vs top 10 opponents as well and he beat Tsitsipas this year in indoor hard court conditons at Rotterdam 6-4 6-3.
Tsitsipas has reached 3 straight semifinals in his past 3 tournaments, but has lost them all. He is playing pretty well, but not at his best level coming into this tournament, and has especially struggled with top 10 players. He is 1-6 against top 10 opponents this year, with a win over Zverev, who has an even worse record than him against top 10 players. Tsitsipas has also lost in the group stages of the ATP Finals in the last 3 editions he’s played.
Tsitsipas leads the h2h 5-2, but they’ve only played once this season, where Sinner is clearly a better player than before. In these meetings, they’ve only played 2 tiebreaks, and there are usually lots of breaks of serve between the two. So, backing a 3 game spread for the winner should be a safe bet. Sinner is carrying a higher level coming into this tournament and is playing superbly vs top opponents. Backed by the home crowd, he should get the job done today.

Holger Rune has been one of Novak Djokovic’s toughest matchups on tour, mostly due to how well-rounded his game is. He can switch from ramping up the pace to just tracking everything down and counter-punching with ease, usually making the Serbian work really hard for the points. He also found some form right before the ATP Finals reaching the final in Basel and the last eight in Paris (where he took Djokovic the distance).
But the problem might be the Turin conditions. Will Rune be able to push Djokovic on a court this fast? They haven’t met on any surfaces this quick so far in their rivalry. The world #1’s more aggressive post-prime version – if he even is past his prime -can actually be even more overwhelming on a surface like this, which he showcased last year. Turin courts might not allow Rune the wiggle room to turn defense into offense like he usually can against Djokovic.
