The Cricket World Cup, officially known as ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, is the international championship of One Day International cricket. The event is organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Cricket Council, every four years, with preliminary qualification rounds leading up to a finals tournament.

Preview:

This year’s competition will showcase a lineup of 10 teams: India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

Surprisingly, the West Indies, winners twice before, will be absent this time, having missed out on one of the nine qualification slots.

As the host nation, India secured an automatic entry, whereas the remaining nine nations navigated a three-year qualification journey through various stages and smaller tournaments.

Format:

The initial phase of the ODI tournament will adopt a round-robin format, featuring all teams playing each other once, resulting in 45 matches. The opening stage will culminate on November 12 with a showdown between India and Netherlands in Bengaluru.

As the round-robin curtains draw, the top four teams will secure spots in the semifinals. The first semifinal, slated for November 15 in Mumbai, will witness a battle between the teams finishing first and fourth. Meanwhile, the second and third teams will lock horns in the second semifinal on November 16 in Kolkata.

An interesting twist emerges with the semifinal venue: If Pakistan secures a spot, Kolkata becomes the battleground, regardless of their ranking. Conversely, if India qualifies, the stage shifts to Mumbai. Should the two arch-rivals meet in the semifinal, Kolkata will be the chosen arena for their clash.
