Taylor Fritz vs Novak Djokovic, 6.30pm GMT

Pick:

Djokovic to win 3-0 @1/1

We don’t hold high expectations for Fritz in his upcoming match against Novak Djokovic. While Fritz is undoubtedly a formidable player, boasting a powerful serve and solid groundstrokes, it’s challenging to identify any aspects of his game that could truly trouble Djokovic. Their head-to-head record of 0-7 in favor of the Serbian, with Fritz managing to win just two sets across those encounters, underscores this point.

Although Fritz has recorded impressive 3-0 victories over his previous opponents in this year’s US Open, it’s worth noting that these opponents were considerably weaker than Djokovic, to say the least.

Djokovic did experience some initial serve-related struggles at the beginning of this tournament. However, his recent match against Gojo showcased a significant improvement in that department. It seems that Djokovic is poised to secure victories in straight sets unless he unexpectedly underperforms. After enduring a grueling five-set battle against Djere, Djokovic is unlikely to start slowly against Taylor Fritz, particularly given that we are now in the quarterfinals. His primary objective should be to wrap up matches swiftly to maintain peak physical condition for a potentially more formidable adversary in the final.

It’s essential to clarify that this assessment is not meant to disrespect Fritz, Tiafoe, or Shelton, who might be Djokovic’s subsequent opponents. However, Fritz’s reliance on his first serve to extricate himself from challenging situations may not be a sustainable strategy when facing one of the most exceptional returners in tennis history.
