The Tour de France is an annual men’s multiple-stage bicycle race primarily held in France. The race typically takes place over a period of three weeks in July, covering a distance of around 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles).
Our Picks:
TADEJ POGACAR @11/10 – To Win
His 2023 season has been truly remarkable, demonstrating his exceptional skills and dominance in the world of cycling. In the early stages of the campaign, he displayed an impressive performance, securing four victories in just six days of racing. His supremacy became even more evident during the Paris-Nice race, where he outperformed his rival Jonas Vingegaard by a remarkable margin of over a minute and a half.
Although Pogacar experienced a relatively slower start in the spring classics compared to his usual standards, he still achieved commendable results. He finished fourth at Milano-San Remo and third at E3 Saxo Classic, showcasing his consistency and competitiveness. However, he soon bounced back and went on to secure victories in prestigious races such as the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, and La Fleche Wallonne, reaffirming his status as an elite cyclist.
Unfortunately, the course of events took an unexpected turn during the Liege-Bastonge-Liege race. Pogacar encountered a crash that resulted in a broken wrist, posing a significant setback in his season.
But this is the big one and were backing him to shine in France with a strong team, and determination surely the injury is going to be the last thing on his mind.
MARK CAVENDISH @2/1 – To Win Any Stage
In a surprising turn of events, Mark Cavendish, Britain’s most successful cyclist, found a new team for the 2023 season just when it seemed like he might be left without a contract after his departure from Soudal-Quickstep Alpha Vinyl last year. Astana Qazaqstan stepped up to offer Cavendish a lifeline, with their primary objective being to help him break Eddie Merckx’s record.
Both Cavendish and Merckx currently hold the record for 34 Tour de France stage victories each, making this season Cavendish’s final opportunity to surpass the legendary Belgian cyclist. Astana Qazaqstan has assembled a team specifically focused on supporting Cavendish and providing him with the best possible chance to achieve this goal. They have even brought in Cavendish’s former lead-out man, Mark Renshaw, as part of the staff, along with talented riders like Cees Bol and Luis Leon Sanchez.
With their recent success in securing the penultimate sprint victory at the Giro d’Italia with Cavendish, the Astana team’s confidence is soaring. There is every reason to believe that Cavendish can break the record in his final Tour de France appearance. Betting on him to win at least one stage or more at odds of 2/1 seems like a generous opportunity worth considering.
BINIAM GIRMAY @200/1 – Top 10 Finish
We believe will lead Intermarche Circus Wanty quest for the green jersey and the Eritrean rider, who has already won a grand tour stage at the Giro d’Italia, can sprint his way to success.
The 2022 Gent-Wevelgem winner will have lead-out men Adrien Petit and Mike Teunissen guiding him all the way to the finish line as they did successfully at this month’s Tour de Suisse, where Girmay out-sprinted Arnaud Demare, Wout van Aert and Jordi Meeus. That said our thought are more each way for a top 10 finish, and what huge value that offers.
The Tour was first organized in 1903 by Henri Desgrange, a French sports journalist and cyclist. It was initially designed as a promotional event for the French sports newspaper L’Auto (now known as L’Équipe). Over the years, it has evolved into a grand sporting spectacle with millions of spectators lining the route and millions more following the race on television and online.
The race features a varied and challenging route that changes each year, with the exception of certain iconic stages that are often included, such as the mountainous climbs in the French Alps and Pyrenees. The route typically includes flat stages, hilly stages, individual time trials, and mountain stages, providing a comprehensive test of a cyclist’s skills and endurance.
The overall winner of the Tour de France is determined based on the cumulative time taken to complete all the stages. The leader in the general classification wears the iconic yellow jersey, known as the maillot jaune. There are also other jersey classifications, including the green jersey for the best sprinter, the polka dot jersey for the best climber, and the white jersey for the best young rider.
The Tour de France has seen many legendary cyclists and memorable moments throughout its history. Cyclists like Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain, Lance Armstrong, and Chris Froome have achieved great success in the race.
