Picks:
Song vs Gutierrez
Yadong: Song Yadong is a powerful, explosive, orthodox striker with power in his hands and feet. He has good movement, and employs a hover pressure strategy with good in and out movement. He fights with his hands low and a lot of head movement to disguise his punches and keep his head off the centerline. He slips and throws big overhangs, hooks, and uppercuts. He is explosive off of his back and does a good job getting back to his feet. He likes to pressure his opponents to the fence, and intercept their shots by slipping and throwing his big overhand. He does get touched coming in with his hands low, and is willing to take a shot to give a shot. At range, Yadong will throw spin kicks and also throw his lead leg teep to keep moving forward.
Gutierrez: Gutierrez is primarily a right handed striker but has the ability and weapons to switch and fight open or closed stance. He is a highly technical striker with very good feints, movement, and range management. Gutierrez has a powerful calf kick, which he uses interchangeably with his jab and left hook. Gutierrez likes to load his spin attacks on the end of his left hooks and has dangerous elbows and kicks from here. Gutierrez will unshift to draw his opponents in and will throw knees up the middle. He will also throw body kicks from open stance. Gutierrez is very patient and his movement and feints overwhelm his opponents, and he will land stiff jabs and leg kicks from both stances. Gutierrez will seize momentum off of his opponents reactions to his feints and land long combinations, and then leave. Gutiererez is very good at controlling his opponent’s resets and capitalizing on them. He does get touched by right hands when he throws his low kicks naked.
Prediction: We like Yadong in this one. His pressure is going to give Gutierrez problems and don’t think Gutierrez will level change to answer it. Gutierrez is very slick and this will be a competitive fight, but Yadong’s shot variety will catch Guttierez at the end of some combinations. We think Yadong will land the bigger shots and win a KO.
Park vs Muniz
Park: Park is an orthodox stance fighter who is patient and is looking to grapple. On the feet, he is very patient and fights behind his jab. Park hover pressures, darts right out of range or checks/high guards when his opponents through, and continues to creep into their space behind small feints and his jab. He mixes in his low kick with his jab well and gets to his single leg takedown proactively and reactively. On top, Park is dangerous and heavy, and has very good opportunistic submissions.
Muniz: Muniz is a left handed striker who likes to fight long until you make him not fight long, at which point he likes to clinch and grapple. He has good body kicks and a good intercepting straight left, which he interchanges with his level change. Muniz is a high level BJJ practitioner with a particularly nasty armbars from the back.
Prediction: Park is a better grappler and all around fighter. He has the grappling skill to deal with Muniz, and think he will control him on the ground. On the feet, Park is going to walk walk walk Muniz down as he is not threatened by his grappling, and beat him up the whole time Muniz tries to get him away or take him down. Park by TKO, sub, or UD.
Haqparast vs Mullarkey
Haqparast: Haqparast is a very good striker, who finds a lot of success with his power and movement. Haqparast is a southpaw, and uses a lot of movement to win the lead foot position and throw his OH left on right handed fighters. He doesn’t throw many kicks and likes to throw long boxing combinations, and leave after throwing.
Mullarkey: Mullarkey is a rangey orthodox fighter who has good bounce in his movement, good hand feints, which he mixes in to open with his long jab. Mullarkey moves his head a lot and shows level change feints and has good jab counters. Mullarkey will start to mix across to the body in behind his jeans and level change feints, which sets up his overhand. Mullarkey plays good high low games, but defensively is a little too head movement and boxer guy oriented and gets touched by big shots up the middle and when he rolls and slips. Mullarkey has good rear low kicks that he uses with his lead hand. He has a good power double leg and top control, but doesn’t get much damage off in this position.
Prediction: Haqaprast is the more skilled fighter and should be a few steps ahead of Mullarkey everywhere. Haqaprast has fought the better guys and shown more diversity in his skillset, and we think will finish Mullarkey in the second or third.
Smith vs Rountree
Smith: Smith is an orthodox fighter and a veteran of 50 fights, and has championship experience. He opens with powerful calf kicks and has a very stiff jab. He sometimes throws his kicks naked which he gets countered by hands with. He has a powerful left hook that he will double up on. He has very good transitions on the mat, as well as submission ability.
Rountree: Rountree is a powerful southpaw striker with a heavy Thai boxing influence. When he is fighting in closed stance, he throws powerful overhands and inside leg kicks. He will double up punches on his lead hand while blitzing to set up his powerful rear overhand on the end of the combination. He moves straight in and out and gets hit moving backwards. In open stance, Rountree hovers and feints to draw shots out of opponents and throw on the back end of their punches. He throws more looping strikes in open stance and is more blitzy and less Thai boxing style.
Prediction: Smith should win here, as he is the more well – rounded and experienced fighter. We think he has the ability to put Rountree on his back and score there and win transitions. Rountree leaves his hips open on his looping strikes and Smith should be able to find his reactive takedowns. Smith by sub.
