Purse: $9,500,000
The AT&T Byron Nelson is a prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour held in Texas. Currently, it is hosted at TPC Craig Ranch, located in McKinney, northeast of Dallas.
This year, the field for the tournament is notably weaker due to the proximity of the next major event, despite offering the highest purse among non-elevated events. TPC Lee, aiming for a three-peat, will be competing at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.
The Byron Nelson tournament has a rich history dating back to 1944, although it has changed venues multiple times. Finally, it settled at Craig Ranch two years ago after player dissatisfaction with the previous venue, Trinity Forest.
Craig Ranch, designed by Tom Weiskopf in 2004, shares the same architect as TPC Scottsdale and the revamped North Course at Torrey Pines. Weiskopf is known for his straightforward and unexciting golf course designs. Craig Ranch lacks distinctive features and can be easily conquered by modern golfers.
One notable change this year is the modification of the 12th hole, turning it into a long par four. As a result, the course will play as a par 71.
In terms of difficulty, this course is relatively easy. The par 3s rank as the sixth easiest on the tour, par 4s as the easiest, and par 5s as the third easiest. It’s a scoring-friendly course that saw 60 players finish with double-digit under-par scores last year.
Driving distance has increased, and the fairways are wide, providing ample room for shots. Neither the rough nor the green-side bunkers pose significant penalties. Tee shots and approach shots are relatively straightforward, making it challenging to stand out from the field through ball striking. Ultimately, the player who gets hot with the putter will likely come out on top.
Betting Picks:
- Scottie Scheffler @4/1: Scottie Scheffler stands out in terms of strokes gained (SG) when compared to the field, and with three weeks of rest, he is a strong contender. Although his odds may give some bettors pause, there is still value, and the odds are decreasing rapidly.
Each Way Picks:
- Tom Hoge @55/1: Over the last 36 rounds, Tom Hoge ranks first overall in approach shots, proximity from 200+ yards, and opportunities gained. Despite not translating these impressive statistics into significant results, Hoge has a history of unexpectedly strong finishes, making him a compelling choice.
- Davis Riley @66/1: Davis Riley rates 44th in strokes gained: tee-to-green on easier tracks but ranks 18th in DraftKings (DK) points, indicating a willingness to take risks and accumulate birdies in bunches. He also ranks in the top 20 in the field for the relevant proximity and yardage ranges, making him a noteworthy option.
