Grand Slam #1

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

We will post daily picks through out the tournament, so be sure to check back daily.

Day 6 Picks:

Tommy Paul vs Jenson Brooksby – Over 40 games @10/11

This should be another great, long match. The 3rd round match between the two Americans will be the 2nd time they face off in their careers. Brooksby and Paul are ranked within 4 spots of each other (39 and 35) and both are playing some very good tennis. When they played last year on hard courts Paul dispatched him in 2 quick sets. We don’t see Brooksby going down that easy this time. He is 3 years younger than Paul and getting better and better. Yesterday he beat world #3 Casper Ruud in 4 sets. It took Paul 5 sets to beat Fokina (Brooksby’s 4 setter took longer), but I think he looked better throughout most of the match. We wouldn’t even know who would be considered the favorite here, But it goes over 40 games in 4 or 5 long sets.

Ugo Humbert vs Holger Rune – Over 36.5 Games @10/11

Humbert is ranked 106, and lost his first two matches this season to players ranked outside the top 100. He managed a win against old man Gasquet before beating a unlucky loser (Kudla) in Round 2, but Rune is a major step up in class and expect he will struggle to compete.

Rune owns a 2-0 H2H record. Both wins came in 2022 (6-3, 6-2 on outdoor hard in March, then 6-4, 6-2 on indoor hard in October). Rune showed he belonged at the top level late in 2022, winning Stockholm in October, runner up in Basel, then shocking everyone by winning the Paris Masters title in November, beating 5 top 10 players including Djokovic in the final.

Andrey Rublev vs Dan Evans – Over 37.5 Games @4/5

Evans will need to be at his best to win this. However, he has gotten the better of Rublev in the past. Rublev will need to keep his unforced error count down if he is to come out on top. The variety of Dan Evans game will take this deep.

Andy Murray vs Roberto Bautista Agut – Over 36.5 Games @5/6

Murray is coming off two consecutive five-setters, which at this stage of his career could turn out to be extremely tough to recover from. Especially against a physical monster such as Bautista Agut, who pretty much destroyed him on two separate occasions in 2022. He may not have enough left in the tank, but we know he will fight till the end.

Novak Djokovic ML @1/8 vs Grigor Dimitrov

The key factor in this is how the hamstring on Novak Djokovic is feeling. It is an injury that tends to be very hard to compete with. Djokovic does tend to do this in tournaments–look injured then come out firing. We think this may be the case.

Belinda Bencic vs Camila Giorgi ML @10/3

This will be a real test of Belinda Bencic’s credentials. Camila Giorgi has been timing the ball sweetly so far in Melbourne and when the Italian gets on a roll she can be hard to stop. If she plays as well as she did in beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, she might  just have the edge here.

Donna Vekic ML @2/5 vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz

Donna Vekic rolled back the years (if a 26-year-old can do that) in dismissing Liudmila Samsonova for the loss of only three games. She will face a wily opponent in good form in Nuria Parrizas Dias, but if the Croatian can maintain the level she has displayed so far in Melbourne, she should have the edge.

Karolina Pliskova ML @2/7 vs Varvara Gracheva

Pliskova was plagued by injuries in 2022, but she’s really picking up her game by now. She’s got a lot of Grand Slam experience and will be very tough to stop. Varvara Gracheva has been doing well so far, but this will be a big step up for her.
