PGA Tour Golf Tips

The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour that made its debut in October/November 2019 as part of the 2020 season. It takes place at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish, Bermuda, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

The tournament holds significance despite the absence of many top-ranked players making the trip to Bermuda. In the 2022-23 season, the Bermuda Championship will have standalone status, meaning the winner will receive the same rewards as a typical PGA Tour event. This includes 500 FedEx Cup points, exemptions for major championships, and job security for the foreseeable future.

The Port Royal Golf Course is highly regarded and has received recognition as one of the world’s best public golf courses by Golf Digest. It has also been named Bermuda’s finest course by the New York Times. With its 18 championship holes spread across 6,842 well-maintained yards, it is the longest and most picturesque course in Bermuda.

Recently, Port Royal underwent an extensive $14.5 million renovation led by original design team member Roger Rulewich. The upgrades were made in preparation for the 2009/2010 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. With the support of the Bermuda Government, Port Royal now stands as one of the premier public golf courses globally. It features TifEagle greens, a state-of-the-art irrigation system, and stunning ocean views from almost every hole. Additionally, the course offers a 300-yard oceanfront driving range and a luxurious clubhouse, ensuring an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Our Picks:

  1. Thomas Detry (18-1): Detry has made the most of his playing opportunities, earning PGA Tour status through the Korn Ferry Tour Playoffs. He has shown promising performances, finishing T12 at the Fortinet Championship and T9 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Although he experienced a slight setback at the Shriners Children’s Open, a couple of weeks of rest should allow Detry to be competitive at Port Royal Golf Course, where he finished T22 in the previous season.
  2. Robby Shelton (40/1): Since reclaiming his PGA Tour card, Shelton has performed well, making the cut in all three of his starts. He was briefly in contention at the Shriners before fading over the weekend. Despite not being the longest hitter off the tee, his exceptional short game has been one of the best on tour this season. Additionally, he has won two of his last ten events on the Korn Ferry Tour.
  3. Callum Tarren (50/1): Tarren should excel with his length off the tee and has gained strokes putting in four of his last five events. He achieved a T13 finish on Bermuda greens at the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier this month. While Tarren’s performance can be inconsistent, making him a boom-or-bust player, if he finds his stride, he can certainly contend at this event. However, it’s worth noting that he was disqualified at this venue last year for signing an incorrect scorecard.
