PGA Tour Golf
Date: Oct 20–23, 2022
This week, the PGA Tour takes us to Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina for the CJ Cup. It’s an intriguing event as the course has only hosted one tournament before, last year’s Palmetto Championship, which Garrick Higgo won in one of his early appearances on the tour.
As a brand new addition to the PGA Tour, filling in for the RBC Canadian Open, Congaree appears to be a long course that will likely play with firm and fast conditions. There are sandy waste areas strategically placed along the fairway edges, and well-positioned trouble spots that will challenge players to decide whether to hit it long and try to carry hazards or hit it shorter and face longer approach shots. Depending on tee placements, a few of the par 4s might be drivable, and the par 5s will be crucial for scoring. We believe that proficiency around the greens and scrambling will be vital at this course. Additionally, due to the variance of lies players are likely to encounter, we will place a slightly higher value on ball striking.
Based on these considerations, here are the key stats for the week, listed in order of importance: Strokes Gained: Around the Green, Scrambling, Ball Striking, Strokes Gained: Approach, Strokes Gained: Off the Tee.
In terms of player targets, we anticipate favoring a European-heavy lineup, as we believe their ability to navigate around trouble and execute various shot types will be advantageous on this course.
The field for this event is exceptionally strong, with six of the top ten and 15 of the world’s top 20 golfers participating. Rory McIlroy is likely to be the overwhelming favorite, with odds ranging from 9/1 to 11/1.
Our Picks:
- Rory McIlroy @13/2: As the favorite and the defending champion (at a different course), Rory has the potential to shine here once again.
- Matt Fitzpatrick @22/1: He performed well in the weaker field last time and possesses the necessary skills to succeed on this course.
- Taylor Montgomery @50/1: He’s a great fit for this course and is poised to gain more attention soon.
- Sam Burns @28/1: He fits the profile of a long hitter who excels on the greens. He’s always a threat to win any tournament he enters.
These are our top picks, and the odds mentioned were accurate at the time of posting.
