The upcoming BMW Championship will take place at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. This marks the first time the PGA Tour is hosting an event in the state, and the course has primarily been used for amateur play, resulting in limited course experience for most players, except for one exception. The tournament will feature the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings, and there will be no cut.

The championship will be held on the South Course of Wilmington Country Club, a challenging par 71 layout that stretches over 7,535 yards. Originally built in 1959, the course underwent renovations last year following a tornado that toppled more than 300 trees.

Notably, in the previous year, Patrick Cantlay showcased an extraordinary performance on the greens, gaining a remarkable 14.6 strokes putting, the highest recorded in that statistic. No player has successfully defended the BMW Championship title since the event’s inception 15 years ago.

The course features Bermudagrass greens and approaches, with bentgrass tees and fairways. According to the club’s director, the South Course presents demanding tee shots with strategically placed fairway bunkers, generously sized putting surfaces divided into multiple sections, and prominently featured flash-faced bunkers.

In terms of previous encounters at the venue, the Palmer Cup was hosted on this course in 2013, where a 20-year-old Justin Thomas showcased his talent, earning 3.5 points in the event (Daniel Berger secured 3 points).

Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, the South Course is the club’s signature course. It underwent a recent renovation by Keith Foster in 2008, and it measures a formidable 7,334 yards, playing as a par 71. In 2009, Golf Digest ranked it as the sixth-best course remodel.

The course includes two exceptionally long par 5s, both exceeding 600 yards. While one of them plays downhill, they are unlikely to be reachable in regulation.

Additionally, there are two par 3s measuring over 200 yards in distance. The majority of scoring opportunities are expected to arise from the eight mid-range par 4s.

The course layout suggests that the use of drivers may be limited due to challenging doglegs and landing zones well-guarded by bunkers. Water hazards also come into play on four holes. Fairways appear relatively narrow, and many landing zones measure under 300 yards in length.

Betting Picks: Most Firms Paying 8+ Places

Cameron Smith is listed at odds of 12/1. As the reigning Open champion, he appears to have a heightened motivation to succeed in PGA Tour events. Smith’s recent performances have been exceptional, making him one of the hottest players in the world at the moment. It is highly likely that he will bring his excellent form into this week’s tournament.

Rory McIlroy has odds of 10/1. We anticipate that McIlroy will be aiming to elevate his already impressive tour performance to a remarkable level by securing a victory in this competitive field.

Justin Thomas is listed at odds of 14/1. With his previous participation at this course in 2013, where he accumulated 3.5 points in the event, Thomas possesses the most extensive course experience among the players in this field. He may seek to tap into that familiarity and rediscover his past success at this venue.
