Saturdays Commonwealth Games Preview
Cricket: Women’s T20
Heather Knight misses England’s Commonwealth Games T20 opener against Sri Lanka but that should have no impact on the outcome of the match at Edgbaston.
Nat Sciver will stand in as skipper for England’s Group B opener, with Knight having not recovered from a hip injury.
Sciver reprised the same understudy role for the final two T20 matches of their recent series against South Africa which England won and won well.
The last time England played a series against Sri Lanka was in 2019 when they ran out comfortable victors by 96 runs, eight wickets and eight wickets again.
The Lankans are a better side than they were three years ago and Chamari Athapaththu has put up some big numbers in recent games. She’s an obvious candidate to top Sri Lanka’s batting card.
The opening Group B affair between New Zealand and South Africa promises to be a far keener affair, although the White Ferns are short enough @2/5.
South Africa have just played six one-dayers in England – three 50-over matches and three T20s – and lost the lot emphatically.
Pick:
Athapaththu top Sri Lanka batter @2/1
Pool:
McKeown has three of the four fastest times ever swum and smoked her main rival Masse at the Olympics last year. McKeown is the one on the up and while the 200m is likely to be her focus she should have few problems with the double.
