Grand Slam #1
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
We will post daily picks through out the tournament, so be sure to check back daily.
Our Picks:
Qinwen Zheng vs Dayana Yastremska
Pick: Yastremska ML @7/4
Two right-handed baseliners play in their first-ever Grand Slam semi-final and the Rod Laver Arena will host what promises to be a mouth-watering affair.
What Yastremska lacks in her service game, she gains in her superb groundstrokes and she unleashed them against a hapless Linda Noskova in the quarters to become the first women’s qualifier in almost 50 years to make it this far in Melbourne.
Qinwen Zheng has seemingly had an easier route to this stage, facing no seeded player so far. However, she has unleashed more aces and committed the least unforced errors in what has been a disciplined performance by the Chinese youngster.
This showdown will be the first ever between the two and it promises to be as explosive as they come. Tough to call, but either the Ukrainian finishes her opponent off in two or the Chinese mounts a comeback. We’ll go with the former.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Coco Gauff
Pick: Sabalenka -3.5 @10/11
Gauff had to battle in the quarterfinal while Sabalenka has been unbothered all tournament, the 25 year old from Belarus is on track to reclaim the world #1 ranking and repeat as the champion of the Australian Open if everything holds true to form. Gauff has enough upside to her game to make this a competitive match and she does lead the h2h 4-2, but the key points in every contest this tournament have gone Sabalenka’s way and we don’t see that changing in a matchup of two of the most in-form players in tennis today.
