Grand Slam #1
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
We will post daily picks through out the tournament, so be sure to check back daily.
Our Picks:
Pavel Kotov vs Flavio Cobolli
Pick: Kotov ML 8/13
The physical work that Pavel Kotov has put in recently is abundantly clear in the weight of his shot. That work is already translating to results in a very healthy win percentage over the past few months. Neither player will be feeling particularly fresh in the legs and we think Cobolli would lose a war of attrition to Kotov.
Aleksandar Kovacevic vs Karen Khachanov
Pick: Khachanov -5.5 @10/11
These two also had tough battles in the first-round. Kovacevic in five sets against recent Auckland champion Alejandro Tabiko, while former semifinalist Khachanov won in four very tight sets against Daniel Altmaier. 25-year-old Kovacevic is immensely talented, but Khachanov should still get this done. The Kovacevic one-handed backhand could particularly break down in this contest.
Novak Djokovic vs Alexei Popyrin
Pick: Djokovic 3-0 @2/5
Djokovic struggled against Prizmic and maybe that physical dip around the third set could be perceived as worrisome. Popyrin probably doesn’t push him into that mode though. The Australian has the weaponry to snatch a set if he redlines, but it’s a style the World No. 1 enjoys countering, especially with the opponent’s subpar backhand.
Christopher O’Connell vs Ben Shelton
Pick: Shelton to win and Over 38.5 games @7/5
Shelton may not be as sure a bet to go deep at the tournament as some may think–parts of the American’s game still fairly underdeveloped. we still consider an average day at the office for him to be enough to beat O’Connell but keep an eye on him as the tournament progresses.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Jordan Thompson
Pick: Tsitsipas 3/0 @11/8
Last year’s runner-up overcame a slow start to come through comfortably against Zizou Bergs, while Thompson had a five-set battle with Aleksandar Vukic. The Australian will need to serve excellently and effectively target the Tsitsipas backhand to win, but we struggle to see him resisting the Greek in a best-of-five set match. Tsitsipas to prevail, but losing a set along the way.
Coco Gauff vs Caroline Dolehide
Pick: Gauff 2-0 @1/5
Nowadays, last year’s US Open champion rarely blinks on the court. Gauff was emphatic in her first round and we’ve no reason to doubt she’ll be emphatic in her second round, albeit against a slightly tougher opponent in Dolehide.
Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Alina Korneeva
Pick: Haddad Maia ML @1/3
Haddad Maia isn’t particularly prone to upsets. She’s an adept fighter that won’t be afraid to take the legs out from underneath the current junior #1 Alina Korneeva.
